Jigoku apartments

[ The second floor hallway has a barren, too still air about it. There’s no creaking of floorboards, no rustling of wind from an unseen source, no little noises as the building reasserts its presence. It’s as if whatever would normally linger there is too concerned with the hallway’s current occupants.

Saki, for her part, is clutching her smartphone far too tightly in her hand, arms coiled around herself like armor as her heels dig into the floor. She hasn’t noticed that she’s turned the phone on – or that, while there is no video, their voices are being broadcast throughout the intranet.

Adachi braces his weight against the doorframe of his apartment, hand still clutching the doorknob so tightly that it rattles in place. The look he had shot Souji, one of agitated suspicion and insidious appraisal, had given way to abject shock at the sight of Saki. Now he stares at her, fear clawing its way up his throat in the form of stomach bile, because this isn’t possible. He threw her inside. He watched her die. He saw the corpse. His nightmares have taken corporeal form before him and he turns on Souji, a terrified fury contorting his expression.

It's the way Adachi's expression changes that prompts Souji to look away (even if it occurs to him that it might, as so many things are with Adachi, be a lie). Glancing back and finding Saki, his own eyes widen briefly. Taking this as confirmation of his suspicions, however, he's quick to turn back, focus on Adachi, just in case.

There's the sound of a single footstep as Souji shifts to take a place between them both, cautious and careful and trying to ignore his own rising discomfort. He's waiting, and in the heavy silence it's almost tangible.
]

Geez, did you miss me that much, kid? [ comes Adachi's trembling voice, low and snarling. ] You couldn't resist inviting me to this little get together, could you? You're always just so damn thoughtful.

[ Silence reigns for a few moments before there's a little sigh, and Souji speaks, steady where Adachi is not, steadier than he feels. ] They brought you back. It wouldn't be my choice.

[ Saki's jaw clamps a little too close together as she takes in the scene, their words. By now, her nails are digging into the phone's shell hard enough to hear the plastic creaking, and the other hand comes down a bit too hard at her side.

She swivels her head to ignore Adachi, but she can't quite dismiss the way his eyes had burned holes into her.
] Okay, great lover's reunion here. Seta, where the fuck are we?

I don't know anymore than you right now. [ He replies, unfaltering calm coloured just a little by urgency. ] I'm assuming it's them mixing things up again - it's possible they've changed locations again.

[ The look Saki gives Souji, unseen to anyone not in the corridor, is one of withering scorn. ]

[ An ominous click fills the the hallway. ]

I have a great idea. How about the two of you brats shut up. [ A pause before he addresses Souji. ] Get over here, kid.

[ A moment passes, and another, and then the sound of yielding footsteps moving further from the recording. ]

[ Saki's reaction is immediate. She doesn't dare run, feeling her feet weighted to the floor like lead. Her lips part, making a soundless little sob as her elbows come too close to her ribs, hands curled under her chin.

There's no more sound through-out the broadcast, not from them or anyone.
